Approximately 50% of residents in aged care facilities present with swallowing difficulties, placing them at increased risk of aspiration, malnutrition and dehydration (SPA, 2014).

Loqui training workshops empower staff to become better equipped to recognise swallowing difficulties, optimise safe swallowing for residents, and make appropriate referrals to the speech pathology team. 

Topics discussed include: 

  • modified diets and thickened fluids; 

  • optimal positioning for oral intake;

  • supportive mealtime environments and ways to promote increased awareness and intake at all mealtimes
